1900 The Paris Exposition celebrates the arrival of the 20th century. J.C. Penny opened his first Golden Rule Store in Kemmerer, Wyoming. Frank Baum published "The Wizard of Oz". Walter Reed determined yellow fever was caused by mosquito bites. William McKinley is re-elected president. The following people were born in 1900:
1901 Marconi receives the first transatlantic radio transmission. 1902 The first science fiction movie, "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" (A trip To The Moon), is shown. 1903 The Wright Brothers fly an airplane for fifty-nine seconds. The movie "The Great Train Robbery" is shown. 1904 Stainless steel is invented. 1906 The YMCA established a camp on Orcas Island. Originally named "Camp Orcila" in 1924, the spelling was changed to "Orkila" in 1938 when the camp property was officially deeded to the YMCA by Kenneth Colman. |
